Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
I have been trying various combos with the desktop app to try to get it working but no luck. Under settings, I have tried 'test connection' and get the error exactly as shown in the attached image 'Unable to send/receive sound data! Port 5060 should be available.' OK, thats simple, then just open ports on my router according to all the good info I have found. So, also attached is what I did for my router - notice openned ports 5060,5061,6060,6061,13000,13001 --all routing from public port to my desktop system IP at 192.168.2.xx. (I set some to forward both TCP and UDP, just to make sure). Still a fail on the settings test connection though... Any ideas what might be wrong?? I read that ROGERS does not block these ports? So I am a loss right now.

Rogers should not be blocking the ports and I don't think they are as there seem to be other voip users that have the Rogers services. The one that really matters is 5060 UDP because that is the SIP signaling port which is used to set the call up etc. Perhaps you have something in your network that has already grabbed the port (Rogers Home phone perhaps) or it might be MS Windows that is blocking it. Check that your computer has opened the port. Normally it should do this as you install the voip client.

I have friends who use FPL and have Rogers. Their phone has always worked well.ntcntc wrote:checking further, it seems rogers blocks these ports...
Have you checked your firewall settings? It could be worth just shutting it down for a bit to test.

Re: Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
ok - if others are using it on Rogers, then it must be some configuration here. it doesnt appear to be the router settings - I have those opened as you can see from the router settings. i just checked windows firewall on the desktop and dellvoice is there to allow access.
Reason i thought it was Rogers was this site: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
which reports the dellvoice ports are closed back to my rogers public IP. will try shutting firewall for a bit to test. thanks..

Re: Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
Running the open-ports tester you mention actually should show no open ports if your NAT is functioning as it should and you have opened no ports to the outside world.. If I open ports 21 and 22 (FTP and SSH) then it reports them as open. I have Bell-Aliant DSL and I have never had anything to do with the Rogers high speed internet. I run FPL and DellVoice on my portable (Toshiba) and both run OK and I have not forwarded any ports from the router to the computer which has it firewall opened for each client. What is the manufacturer and model number of the router that you have? Has it ever been configured to support Rogers home phone?

Re: Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
The router is the Trendnet Wireless N Gigabit router model TEW-673GRU. It has never been configured for Rogers home phone. Like you, I was hoping I could just install dell voice and it would magically work on my desktop without fiddling around with any router settings. Skype for example seems to work fine and I did nothing with the router settings to direct traffic to the desktop versus other computers on the home network.
My initial test of turning off windows7 firewall made no difference. Next I will place the desktop into DMZ and test.

Re: Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
After a look around the net for your router it seems that your router is not voip friendly and even putting it into the DMZ may not help. I don't think this means that you will not be able to get it to work but it mat not be very easy. I would start back with the modem and work down the line with orderly testing to the computer to discover the problem and what can be done about it. If your modem has its own internal router you can start by connecting the computer directly to that and if DellV works then the problem is clearly with the router.
I all else fails then one possibility may me to put open source firmware into the router that should solve your problems but never having done this myself I cannot not recommend it. One of the frequent posters on this site (perhaps bridonca) may be able to give advice in that area.

Re: Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
Thanks very much for your help dibsmft. I think you might indeed be right about the router. earlier today i put the desktop computer into DMZ and tested it with windows firewall on and windows firewall disabled and it STILL did not work with DV. So it sure could be the router (as a matter of fact, i think that likely proves it). You are right - next test will be to bypass the router altogether and connect the desktop right to my cable modem and see what happens. I will also just verify that I have the most up to date firmware on the router. You might be right about using open source firmware too. Would like to avoid that, but might be necessary. Thanks again.

Re: Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
OK. must be something peculiar to this desktop, so thanks for all the help here. I just directly connected to the cable modem bypassing the router, was assigned an IP and connect through the internet. started dellvoice, ran the test and the usual 'unable to send/receive sound data. port 5060 should be available' message came up. as before. next step. i checked the windows firewall settings for dellvoice - says dellvoice is allowed on private and public networks. so next step, i turned off windows firewall completely. same error message. i am just going to see if it might be the avast/antivirus blocking something. it would be a first if that was the case.

Re: Dellvoice Desktop App got me stumped
It looks like you have more than one problem but I guess the avast/antivirus is probably the problem. There is nothing else that I can think of that could be the problem.
