DellVoice 1.2.2
Iphone 4S IOS 5.1
I installed Dellvoice on my Iphone and found that it is always running in background with Iphone put into standby mode. The battery depleted faster with DellVoice application is running and consume less with DellVoice deactivated. In 4 hours the ratio of battery depletion is 12% (with DellVoice running) against 4% (without DellVoice running).
I found the problem based on the following procedures:
1. Activate DellVoice and register with the Fogo server. There is only DellVoice and my Phone application running.
2. Check the "Usage Time" and "Standby Time" from Setting--General--Usage.
3. Mark down the time and put the phone in standby mode by pressing the button on top of the Iphone. (Screen Turn off).
4. After 5 minutes, unlock the phone and check the usage. It is found that the "Usage Time" and "Standby Time" were escape the same amount of minutes i.e. 5 minutes. That mean the DellVoice still running as normal program and consuming battery.
5. I then deactivated the DellVoice by double click the home key and press and hold the DellVoice icon. The delete sub icon show up and I pressed the sub icon to deactivate the DellVoice.
6. I then put the phone in standby.
7. After 10 minutes, unlock the phone and check the usage again. This time, the "Usage Time" advanced 1 minute while the "Stanby Time" added 10 minutes. This is a good proof that the phone is in real standby mode without DellVoice running.
8. I repeat this practice many times and it is a good proof that without running DellVoice the battery depleted slower while running DellVoice the battery depleted faster.
9. In a test of 4 hours, the difference are
- with DellVoice running, 12% depleted over 4 hours.
- without DellVoice, 4% depleted over 4 hours and the difference between Usage Time and Standby Time is around 4 hours.
I did the same test for other VoIP apps such as Google Voice, Viber, Magic Jack, NetTalk, none of them consume significant Usage Time when the phone is put into standby and therefore not depleting the battery life.
We have to keep DellVoice running all the time in order to receive calls to the DellVoice number, however, with it running, it is always running as normal usage program no matter it is in the background or under phone standby and therefore deplete the battery quicker.
My alternative to the problem is to call forward the DellVoice to my cell phone number on the same phone and deactivate the DellVoice. All the incoming calls will be forwarded to my normal cell phone number and of course I have to pay the phone bill for incoming calls.
For outgoing call, I turn on DellVoice when need and after finish the call, deactivated it right away to save battery life. Really hassle.
The DellVoice apps developer need to investigate improving the program to put it in sleep under standby and let the Notification center do the work for alerting user of incoming calls.

Well DellVoice has push notification
I got incoming even DellVoice is not running in background. Maybe your iphone did not have push notification working properly
Download iPusher to test your push notification

Tigerking: good detailed research! Hopefully the app developers are made aware of your hard work and can plan a fix in the future based on your troubleshooting and diagnosis. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that this may not have been picked up in testing, as I am sure that battery life and power consumption PROBABLY was not something that was tested for ... although I could be wrong on that...

Thank you for pointing that out. I made some more test calls while DellVoice is deactivated for running for a while.
DellVoice register with Fongo at the first time it is run from your Iphone. Even you quick the program, the registration is still in effect.
During this period, when there is incoming call the push notification will ring your bell and activate DellVoice to answer call. You will notice the DellVoice activate again and perform authethentication with the server. It will take a while before you can see the Answer button to answer the phone.
If you deactivate the DellVoice again after answer the call, further incoming call will go to your call forward number or voice mail box.
After deactivating the DellVoice, the registeration on the server side expire, sometime, the incoming call will not ring your phone, instead it will go to your call forwarding number (i.e. is my cell phone number) or voice mail box depending on your setting in your account.
However sometime after a long while of deactivating DellVoice, incoming call will push through the DellVoice notification function!!
It was Fongo said that in other post, you have to run DellVoice on your smart phone in order to receive call. But it looks like there is a discrepancy.
My push notification work probably.
To be safe, I forwarded the DellVoice to my cell phone number, so that no matter which number will be called when incoming call to my DellVoice number, I can answer the phone.
I post my findings here that the DellVoice is still consumming battery power as in normal mode while it is running, no matter in the foreground, background and in standby mode.
In the last couple days, without DellVoice running, my Iphone only depleted 30% battery in a day for a fair usage as compare with 60-70% deplete with DellVoice running, it is a big save.

Re: DellVoice always run on Iphone in standby mode
After 6 months there is no improvement in the power consumption of DellVoice Apps on Iphone (I am talking about DV 1.3 as DV 1.4 is not working probably and keep crashing on me while I am accessing the contact list and I didn't move to this release).
No matter DellVoice is running foreground, background or while the iPhone in standby mode the battery is depleting (with DV running and check with the General--> usage and find the clock of "Usage" is kicking the same as "Standby" time. Without DV running, the "Usage" is state the same after putting the IPhone in standby for 10 min or more).
Can Fongo or DellVoice developer seriously look into this issue?

Re: DellVoice always run on Iphone in standby mode
I used DellVoice 1.4 on my iphone 4 with jailbroken already and did not drain battery much at all. There is a down size for it when it has incoming call could not answer in time
I think push delay and perform authethentication with the server take long time so I got missed call. However I checked history no missed call so that I had to login on dellvoice site to able to see call log.
For tigerking if your iPhone jailkbreak after you finish using your iphone just shaking the phone then all the apps are running in background will close.
Save time to close the apps one by one and save battery too.
I hope they will working on to improve push and perform authethentication with the server faster and quicker for future release
