Fongo/Freephoneline/Dell Voice???

Post by godot2012 »

I have an FPL number in Toronto, it is forwarded to my POTS line in Kitchener for a few years now. Last week I signed on with Fongo and have local number. If all goes well I will cut the umbilical cord to Ma Bell. Aside from some issues native to IP telephony my home setup works well so far. As I go along testing the setup I will have more questions.

But for now: Would someone please explain the relationship/ownership between he three companies?

Thanks

It's been explained in detail a few times over the course of the last year, so I won't go into deep, but I'm responding so as not to keep you, waiting Godot.

Freephoneline.ca was the original brand for a free VoIP service provided to Canadians, it is run under the umbrella of a CLEC called "Fibernetics" which also has competitive business VoIP options.

A key part of the growth strategy for Freephoneline.ca was to gain revenue and reduce costs via partnerships and advertisement. Enter branded Freephoneline.ca accounts.

They run on the same general infrastructure, but have their own specific servers to handle SIP connections/registrations and user databases. Freephoneline.ca then began a brand-name change to Fongo, and somewhere in the middle of this ended up offering two slightly different services on the same infrastructure. (Thus Freephoneline.ca's SIP unlock key or Fongo's "home phone" service.)

Dell Voice, is a result of one of the advertising/strategic partnerships which has done wonders for getting the VoIP world infront of computer user's eyes and fingers, if not for the Freephoneline.ca/Fongo brand itself. It's biggest strength is in the Softphone category, where it's desktop software is much more sleek than the Freephoneline.ca/Fongo software, and it has support for all major "smartphone" platforms.

Once again, thanks. Now why can't someone take your response to me and just cut and paste it on all websites on their Main (or who are we) pages.

I a impressed by your recognition of where "godot" come from. Did you read the book or googled the name?

Cheers
Laszlo
