looking for clarification on porting and VOIP unlock

Post by corporate_gadfly »

Hi there,

Long time lurker, been using FPL for about a year to forward Google Voice to my home number (that procedure doesn't work any more, BTW). First time poster.

I have a Obi202 connected to a Linksys WRT160N v3 (running Toastman) being served via TekSavvy cable internet.

My plan is to use FPL for local phone, GV for North American dialing (obi202 is so easy from that point of view) and VOIP.ms for other international calls.

I currently have a FPL 647-xxx-xxxx number. In my mind, I am thinking of the following sequence of events.
  • pay for the VOIP unlock - $50
  • Trial the service and play around with digit maps and 311/411/n11 etc.
  • Once satisfied, pay $25 to port my 416-xxx-xxxx number
Am I correct in understanding that $75 is my total expenditure (the VOIP unlock key now belongs to the 416 number, I suppose).

Once the above diabolical plan is set in motion, I can say goodbye to Rogers Home Phone. Currently looking at GSM dialers to connect my home alarm system to the Central Station with a pre-paid 7-11 Speakout SIM.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Cheers.

So, I went ahead and bought the VOIP unlock.

SIP Username: 1647xxxxxxx

So, once I port 416-number (for $25) will the SIP Username change to 1416xxxxxxx?

Thanks in advance.

Hi gadfly,

Yes, if you port your number over, the VoIP unlock key will be changed to accomodate the new number. You will NOT be required to purchase it again (assuming you are porting to the account with the VoIP unlock key already purchased)
