Issues calling xxx-310-xxx numbers

Post by bigg3522 »

I thought I'd ask, as I started looking into this further after being unable to dial 310 numbers.

For instance, I'm trying to dial Panago Pizza, xxx-310-0001, and everytime I get a message saying my call can't be completed. I've tried with the area code and without. I can dial long distance, and I have money on my account for any non free calls, but still the calls won't go through. I've looked at other "free" or cheap services, and there is a charge for these numbers. I'm curious, because I couldn't find anything, but does FPL block the ability to dial 310 numbers? This gets to be a problem because some internet access companies are moving to this 310 thing, like TELUS and Bell, and Shaw, and Rogers, and others, so not being able to dial this is an issue. Is this a Me problem, or a FPL problem?

This is a known issue with FPL, and apparently they are not required to complete calls to 310 numbers as per CRTC regulation. 310-numbers, although widely advertised (as you state) are NOT traditional phone numbers, but rather "shortcut" numbers much like 800 numbers, which route to certain services based on ANI information from the caller ... IE: someone calling the 310-telus number from Alberta will get AB customer service, while someone from BC will get BC ... for those pizza joints, they also use the ANI to route your call geograpically, sometimes to the closest restaurant.

So when you all a 310-number, there is some lookup and 'magic' (behind the scenes stuff done) and then the call is completed/trunked to a DIFFERENT pre-defined 10D number ...

For whatever reason, Fongo service does not support 310-numbers at all. Their reasoning is that because VOIP is non-geograpical based, the advanced call routing does not work correctly etc.

You can find some information from previous threads on this topic, however "310" as a search term yields no results, as it is "too short"; you can find it with a manual check through the forums though. Not a ton of information, but some previous back and forth on this topic and some Fongo responses about why NOT.
