FPL Unlock key doesn't unlock a vonage PAP2 ??
Hi Guys
I currently have a PAP2 adapter, provided and subscribed with vonage canada. I called freephoneline to purchase the VOIP Unlock Key, but I was told by the sales rep it will not work, that I should call vonage first and get it unlocked, otherwise the FPL unlock will not work. Is this true???
Thanks in advance folks,
Eddie

The FPL VoIP key unlocks/allows SIP access to your FPL account, otherwise you can only use the FPL softphone.
The Vonage ATA you have is locked to Vonage, meaning, it will only provision & register to Vonage itself, no other ITSP. You can get DogFace05 on DSLReports.com forums to flash the Vonage adapter so it can be used with other providers, such as FPL, or you could just go buy another ATA from Ebay/Kijiji or such. That is probably your best bet. You will still need to buy the VoIP unlock key from FPL to enable SIP access to your account.
Now that I think about it, your best bet is to probably buy the ATA & key from FPL themselves, then you have support for the device and don't need to post questions like this one.

That would be the best way to put it. When buying our ATA, we provide technical support.tbrummell wrote:

Well his question was asking FPL to unlock his Vonage device for him so he can use it with FPL
No FPL just sells VOIP unlock key for you or they will sell you the device with pre config every thing ready to use
Just plug and play
If you want to bring your device over and use it then you have to do your own setup, but first you need to unlock your device

Re: FPL Unlock key doesn't unlock a vonage PAP2 ??
Thanks for clarification guys. The reason why I was confused is I called a week ago to ask some questions and the rep said the unlock key would actually unlock from vonage and open it to be used. Yesterday, I called to actually purchase the key and I was told different. That is why I posted my question.
Thanks for taking the time to specify what the unlock key is, I'm sure more than one will find this post useful.
Cheers,
Eddie

Re: FPL Unlock key doesn't unlock a vonage PAP2 ??
My quick read is that the OP was not sure of the difference between unlocking his ACCOUNT (FPL key to use BYOD) and unlocking his HARDWARE (provider-locked/subsidized, just like cellco handsets).
Either it was a clever attempt to circumvent locked hardware, or actual lack of knowledge in what the FPL-"unlock"-key unlocked.
I think from the existing responses, that it should be clear when the OP returns to check his thread!
High Level Summary:
locked HARDWARE - contact original provider or hack it yourself
locked ACCOUNT (ie softphone only) - buy Unlock key from Fongo

Re: FPL Unlock key doesn't unlock a vonage PAP2 ??
Will the unlock code unlock my safe I have forgotten the combination to in my basement?
I sympathize with your confusion, it can get a bit frustrating when you are told different things.
You may be able to get the PAP2T unlocked, but I don't think I would bother as I have heard that if you do a reset on them, or upgrade the firmware, they can revert back to being locked. I do not know this for sure, it is something I remember reading a few years back.
Your best bet is to either buy the ATA and config file from FPL, or buy an ATA and config file separately. Something like this is a good option http://www.ebay.com/itm/Grandstream-Han ... 4abd3bc68a
You won't get any support if you buy your own device. If you do buy the ATA from FPL you have a chance of getting help from them - or you might just get sent here to ask

You should give the combination to me as a "just in case scenario"Jake wrote:Will the unlock code unlock my safe I have forgotten the combination to in my basement?

Unlocking subsidy-locked hardware
Not certain about PAP2Ts ... subsidy-locked mobile phones however, for the most part, once unlocked remain that way, even with resets and fw upgrades (there are a few older exceptions to this). From various other hardware I have obtained unlock codes/keys to, they have all survived the "little tiny paper clip button" factory resets and firmware upgrades. The LOCK part of it is usually in an EPROM separate from the code part, but not always. Once the unlock code is flashed in, it is a permanent toggle .... again, I don't have a PAP2T or any firsthand experience with it, so don't take my version 100% ... your mileage may vary.Jake wrote: You may be able to get the PAP2T unlocked, but I don't think I would bother as I have heard that if you do a reset on them, or upgrade the firmware, they can revert back to being locked. As has been suggested on this post, for the cost of a decent ATA, purchasing one from Fongo and taking the included support therein makes it a worthwhile investment.

There is a thread along the lines of what I had read before. Funnily enough it talk about Vonage so it is probably apt for this thread.
So buying a new ATA is probably the best route.
