Why does Fongo work on only certain WIFI? Way around this?

Post by crichdr »

Hi, I've notice that my Fongo account on my iphone 4s with ios5.0.1 will only work at home wifi. When at the university I can make calls but there is no dial tone. The people on the other end recieve my calls but there is no sound. I can recieve calls but it disconnects as soon as the phone call recieves the initial call. Although, at home there is no problem. Lastly, up until about a week ago I could use texting on the university wifi. see below for details:
Furthermore, before I used to be able to at least authenticate on university wifi. No my phone has the annoying "authenticating" signal on the top of the screen and never connects at university therefore my texting no longer works on the university wifi.
Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help. Neither does switching on my 3G fooling app on wifi, neither does trying it in airplane mode.

Any ideas? I would really like to recieve and make calls while I'm on the University Wifi.
Thanks in advance!

I would suggest that your university is blocking ports that Fongo uses. It could be that initially not many people were using Fongo so connecting wasn't much of an issue, but if they saw a big spike in voip traffic, they may have closed the port(s).

I'm not sure if there is a voip speed test that will run on a mobile, but if you can gain access to a computer or laptop try searching for a VOIP SPEED TEST and run a few tests to see if VOIP is supported on your university's network.
