I recently reconfigured my setup and am using an ethernet switch connected to the ISP modem which is Cogeco. The ATA's draw their own IP's via DHCP from the ISP thus not needing to go through a router which I had been doing previously.
Question - Is port mapping still required if connected directly to the internet with the ATA (port 5060 or whatever)?
I thought of doing this as to not burden the Router with data. It seems to work fine but curious about the Port Mapping requirement or not. I dont want to take it away since this is my only phone line for the residence.
Thanks

You'd only need to use port forwarding if you're having problems (usually caused by poorly designed routers/router firmware not knowing how to handle SIP/VOIP properly).
If you've plugged it in and it works perfectly, then nothing needed! In most scenarios it's plug and play just like that.

So what your saying is I can remove the mapped port and all will work fine. As it sits currently with the Port field completed I gather it is not using anyway since its not going through the router.
Thanks
Thanks

It probably will not matter. Port mapping port 5060 is kind of useless, because it is mostly a outgoing port. You have to make sure the routing device is able to direct incoming RTP packets to the correct SIP device, and if the routing device is not able to do that reliably, you need to manually forward RTP ports the SIP device needs.hanke wrote:So what your saying is I can remove the mapped port and all will work fine. Ok thank you for the reply....I will just leave it as it is...calls are going through fine.
(Only issue I am experiencing is the intermittent registration problems with the FPL server, same as some other users are encountering and have so posted)
