home phone not ringing

Post by southnam »

All of a sudden last week my home phone stopped ringing. I noticed it when I would get a email with a voice message b/c I have my messages forwarded to my email. Anyhow, when I call it, i hear my 4 rings before it goes to message but the actual phone at home does not ring. Dialing out works fine etc...

Help!!!!

okay did some more testing..
The set up I have is that I have my ATA plugged into a wall phone jack and then have my phones plugged into the other jacks throughout the house. Have been using this way for months now.
Anyhow, to problem solve I tried plugging my phone right back into the ATA and it rings fine. Some the problem seems to be that for some reason when plugged form ATA to wall jack and wall jacks out to other phones, the signals somehow get loss and the phones never receive signal to ring. But they work fine for calling out. Is there a reason for this? Stregnth of signal getting lost through the lines? But shoudln't this effect the overal phone quality or something like that?

I would think you either have a short on the house wiring, or your house wiring is still connected to the incoming line from Bell (or whoever provides your phone line)

Put a volt meter on the two wires connected to the back of your wall socket without your ata plugged in and see if there is anything (set it to 50v DV or there about)
If it is all clear, again with nothing plugged in, change it to ohms and see if there is a short between the two. It should be clear.

How many phones do you have plugged in when you do connect the ATA to your house wiring, and are you double sure the house wiring is not connected to the incoming line.

It may not be a short. How many phone are you plugging into other jacks? How many open jack with no phones plugged in? (believe it or not, that can also affect it)

Of the phones you have plugged in, how many are cordless phones with their own power sources?

Depending on the set-up, it might be that the phones are still registering the incoming calls, but the REN in the ATA is not strong enough to power all the phones.
