How many phones can a Linksys pap2T support?

Post by fan »

I have a linksys PAP2T adapter. If I hook 2 or 3 phones to it by a spliter, is there any risk to burn the ATA?

Not so much as burning the ATA, but each FXS port can usually only handle 5 phones. Since the port only pushes out a certain voltage, too many phones would exceed that maximum voltage and no phones would ring. I would try to stick under 3 or 4 to ensure everything rings properly.

Sounds good! That is really the optimal (safe) amount, granted I'm sure Jake and I can agree you can get up to 11 working, it is mighty difficult and not worth the effort unless you're doing it for fun!

One suggestion, why not consider buying cordless phone with multiple bases? In this case, you only have one phone physically connected to the FPL ATA Box and the rest are through cordless !

Yes - Since the cordless phone bas and hand set's are individually powered, you can have up to 8 or 12 I believe.

That's what I need and using 4 Handset Panasonic DECT phones.
Works like a charm. Don't know if DSL filter provided should be used with FPL line.

It should be used on the base set - Obviously not the rest, since they are wireless.

I have 5 regular (1 in my shed) and 2 cordless phones connected to mine right now. :D
I think I will pull the plug on 2 of them as I sometimes experience "lag" or cut-outs on occasion when on a call. :?
I suspect it might be that since I have QOS setup for my ata. Mind you I never experienced this with my paid VOIP service.

i would think you can have as many as you want plugged in. the question should be "How many phones (off the hook and ring), can a Linksys pap2T support?" as Caller ID needs a power source on it's own. A phone not in use, doesn't take power till you pick up the receiver. So unless you got 10 phones hooked up through the house and 10 people answer the call. i see a problem with echoing going on at the far end of the house from the ATA.

But as far as i know, the PAP2T has two FXS ports on the back.

This is wrong. if you look at the back of every phone, you will find REN (ring equivalency number)rating. An ATA can handle maximum of REN5. You simply add the REN number to find out how many phones you can connect. So if your phone is REN 0.9, you can connect 5 of them to the one ATA.

It's not the voltage that matters but how much current can ATA output.
