Hi all,
I have a question, if you could answer I will be happy.
Can I transfer my current cellphone number to free phone-line?
If yes, can I have the same number on my cellphone and with free phone line or I will have to cancel it right away or it can go parallel for a time how does it work?
For example, I have to move to another province for work, but I would like to keep my cellphone number because of my contacts,
could I keep that number with free phone-line?
Thank you
Anna

Re: number transfer
In most cases, you can port your cell phone number to freephoneline.ca. Freephoneline.ca has to offer phone numbers in that city though. It will cost you around $80, which is $20 porting fee, and I believe $50 for the sip settings and tax. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. If you have a good enough cell phone with a wifi connection and a decent sip client, you can make and take freephoneline calls, and there would be no cost to your cellphone minutes.
With a successful port to freephoneline.ca, your cell phone will lose the old number. The cell phone needs a new number. However, freephoneline.ca allows you to forward to another number, even a number to another major Canadian city. For free. As an example, if the old number is a Toronto number, and you get new cell phone number for Calgary, calls made to your old Toronto number can be forwarded to your new Calgary cell phone number. It is a local call for people in Toronto, and if you are in Calgary, it is a local call on the cell phone also.

Of course you can port your current cellphone number into FPL, however as what I have learned from this forums, you need to:katonaea wrote:Hi all,

1. Have a FPL number (temporarily), then
2. You could apply for number port-in to FPL without telling your cellphone company let say Fido,
3. By receiving your application, FPL will coordinate with Fido for this issue and it may take 1~2 months;
4. Once the number porting is successful you will have same number for both FPL and Fido, if someone calls you both of your FPL and cellphone would ring, you can pick up either one. I believe this "parallel" operating lasts until you cancel your cellphone service; but appearently you're not recommended to do so, you could...
5. Contact Fido to cancel your cellphone service so that you don't have to pay them any more, while cancelation starts you would no longer hear your cellphone rings;
6. As per Bridonca's advice, you could set your successful-port-in FPL number forwarded to your Calgary phone number for free, so that your Toronto clients can still make local call to you, and your Calgary phone rings!
If any of the above is wrong please help correct it, thanks.

Re: number transfer
Fantastic answer, with all but two stipulations:
a) When your number is ported from whomever your provider is, that line is effectively "cancelled" and only active with Freephoneline.ca.
b) The process, once all the paperwork has been compiled and process by me (15min), I send it off to our Director of Carrier Services to do the coordinating with your carrier.
The entire process granted there are no set backs takes about 2 - 3 weeks, not months.
