Can't hear anything!

My AVG firewall seems to be partially blocking my desk-top FPL soft-phone app. If I turn AVG's firewall off, FPL works. If AVG's firewall is on, I can make calls, but I don't hear it ringing, and when the other person picks up, they can hear me, but I can't hear them. If they call me, it rings through, but same issue occurs where I can't hear them. FPL is in the list of allowed applications for my firewall, so after Googling around for a while, I think I have to manually open a port- but I don't know which ones. When I ran the FPL test connection check, I got a message "Unable to send/receive sound data! Port 13000 should be available." This makes me think that 13000 is the port I need to open, but even after calling AVG support I couldn't open it. It wanted me to provide values for the "Remote port" (it didn't work to enter 13000 in both "local" and "remote" port). AVG suggested that FPL could provide port numbers. I'm also wondering if the protocol should be the default TCP, UDP or something else, and if I should enter "In" "out" or "both." Any help is greatly appreciatd!

(I am using the newest version of the FPL app, OP is Windows 7, and I'm on Cogeco cable internet, RCA broadband modem, no router).
