anybody can give me a hint on whether the LINKSYS SPA1001 adapter works with freephonline?

Yes it should do, as long as it is not locked to another company and you have bought the unlock key.

Most Linksys ATA work in a similar way, so you should be able to follow the PAP2T guide to set it up. http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=310

That one is not correct and your ATA will not work configured that way.
