I have had endless trouble with the Linksys ATA box for incoming call to the point where I wanted to junk the system and get a phoneline.
In my moment of frustration I fixed the problem, as it goes Success is found at the brink of failure.
The key is open your settings for you line on the ata box, and set the ata box to always use the preferred driver for voice calls, I ticked this and things are golden from that point on.
I will put in a more specific post on the steps if anyone can't figure it out from this.
freephoneline is a great service and has saved me a lot of money, the only thing is you got to know how to setup a connection every time you change isp providers.

What do you mean setup a connection every time you change ISP's?
The ATA is generic. All you need to do is plug it into a router and it will work (port forwarding may need to be done).

That "use preferred codec" can cause all sorts of troubles if not checked. I've seen everything from poor call quality to being unable to call specific numbers - all caused from that one setting. I'm glad to hear you got things working though! VOIP is really a great service to eliminate phone line costs, but sadly VOIP uses the internet and usually requires the use of a router - and a lot of people who aren't computer-comfortable are lost when it comes to configuring routers to allow traffic through
