I was able to make phone calls, but whenever someone try to call me back, all they hear is 5 rings tone followed by "The person you are trying to reach is not available, please leave a message" I tried "Port Range Forward" on my WRT54G router, and put my ATA to DMZ, still not able to receive phone calls.
Is the WRT54G router flashed with the latest firmware? The stock firmware that comes with the WRT54G router is really awful, especially when it comes to SIP VOIP. It is best to have this router flashed with a 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT.
I am pretty sure, it's my WRT54G router, was too lazy to do the DD-WRT update. It's also about time to upgrade my router, so I just bought a D-Link 655 Extreme N router. Re-configured D-Link, set ATA to DMZ. Phone works right away, able to make outgoing calls as well receive incoming calls
Well, that is one way to do it! LOL Glad that at the end of it all you are up and running and placing/receiving calls without hassle! That's all that really matters!
The non-working router can become your rainy-day project now, or just flog it off on some other unsuspecting sap!
(if the price is right, or free, where are ya located? I always -love- projects.... )

Does the ATA work fine without using DMZ?
Putting an ATA in the DMZ is a bit of a security risk and should really be avoided at all costs.
If the ATA doesn't work without DMZ, then find the ports that are the trouble and forward them individually to the ATA. Putting it in the DMZ allows all sort of access into the ATA from virtually anyone, anywhere.
I would not worry too much on adding DMZ on such a stupid device as an ATA. The damage a hacker could do on such a device would be extremely limited. But if your router firmware is crap, DMZ is still not going to be all that much help anyway. I never use DMZ because I never have enough trust in the router firmware to make the right decision when a conflict arises.
