register failed for months. still fail even ATA in DMZ

Post by meokey »

since Nov 2012, I have been experiencing "register failed" error and tried various solutions, none of them worked.
Today, I just simply put my ATA (OBi202) into DMZ, restarted router and ATA. Still not working. The other 3 SIP services on the same ATA works fine.

FPL tech support team, as a customer, I need your help to solve this problem ASAP! If FPL can not resolve this problem, I request refund because my home phone has not been working for months! What's the SLA has to say?

after the major outrage server problem best way to fix the problem is factory reset and re-enter the sip info

and get an old router with DDWRT flash

I did get problem about a day right on Christmas night after that it has been working fine here

The router that you have was probably intended for industrial use and is probably overkill for most peoples home use but that is not to say that you did not have need of it. DMZ is not a cure all for routers and should only be used for testing and not as a substitute for correct configuration with port forwarding (your router is reported on the web to be a problem in this area).
To save more frustration I would agree with seagame200, if you can get hold an older router (you might already have one) give that a try and, sure, if it is possible flash the firmware with DDWRT. If that is not possible then turn off DMZ and try to forward ports to the ATA and you may need help with that. With FPL working on their running servers it mich be better to make sure that you can get a voip/sip free service to work such as getonsip.com or antisip.com (there lots more).

Please check the mode of your modem (Routed vs Bridged), because when in Routed mode, it will act as a router and conflicts the settings (like port forwarding and even DMZ) you do in your actual router. I had your, and many other problems, with my phone as well, after December 19 (before that, it had been working fine). So, I changed my router to Bridged Mode (as it was indeed in Routed Mode), and changed my Router to handle the PPPoE connection. After I had saved these settings, all went well right away. Good Luck!

It would be interesting to know what had changed to stop the phone working on Dec 19th. The modem should work OK in routed mode but since you have a router it is probably just as well to run it in bridged mode so that the router will get the external IP directly.

I will try to reset the ATA settings this weekend, but not likely be able to change the router - there are too many devices are connecting and I didn't make any changes at the time ATA stopped working.

I hope FPL can provide official recommended settings of ATA and the router, so I can follow to check. It's so hard to guess and try.

I really do not know. I did not change a thing, I didn't even had set up any port forwarding and it was working fine for nearly a year. Suddenly on December 19 the problems started, and not only for me, FPL actually put an announcement up http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7286. Anyway, from that time of on my routed modem did not only cause problems with my phone, but also with my PS3, it stayed in NAT Type 3, no matter if I forwarded all the necessary ports and even in DMZ it was hit and miss, as this gave me tons of error messages on my PS3 and my phone went randomly in and out of service. After putting my router in Bridge mode my PS3 now shows NAT Type 2 and my phone is working perfectly fine. So, not really an explanation as to why it suddenly started to fail, but at least fixing the modem worked :-)

I didn't change a thing either, it was working fine, even without all the port forwarding for nearly a year, suddenly on December 19 it started to act up. I have tons of devices hooked up to my router as well, but that really doesn't get effected at all. Make sure you know the User Name and Password that establishes the internet connection with your ISP, set your modem (if you can get access to it - you may have to wire directly into modem with a computer) to Bridge Mode, than in your WAN Setup of your Router, set the connection type to PPPoE (if modem is in Routed Mode, the connection type in your router is most likely set to "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" (or something similar)), User Name and Password should become available fields and fill these in. Save the settings and you are done. I didn't even have to reboot, but some devices may require a reboot.
