What is DMZ mode and how can I make sure my adapter is not set in that mode?

It means "demilitarized zone" which basically means any incoming connections will be routed to whatever device is in the DMZ. This is why when a voip connection doesn't seem to be working, putting the ata in the DMZ is a good test to see if it is a router/port issue. Unless DMZ is required by something, it shouldn't really be used.

You have 2Wire in your details as your router, so take a look at this page which might help.
