Callers cannot hear me clearly...

Post by Shaf77 »

I have been having this problem for a while now where I have to repeat myself when I call people from my FPL. I went out and bought a new Panasonic phone last night, charge it overnight and tested this morning withe same issues. The other end complains that some of my words get lost and the line is not very clear :( I also had my wife call me from home (FPL) and I get the same issues.

Are there any settings I need to modify to get this to work?

I have a SPA3102 with Rogers Extreme.

Very possibly there are settings that you might need to tweak.
Not just with your ATA setup, but with your router setup as well.

So make sure your ATA is either DMZ, or better, properly port forwarded from the router (ports 5060-5061, 6060-6061)

On the ATA line ensure that settings match the specs given in the config file as closely as possible, tweak the line voltage a little if necessary.
Kris and Steve, and a few of the local users are very good with ATAs in general, so if one of them has your ATA, I'm sure they've got some ideas. Or you can always take a screen shot of your configuration pages and post them up.

Correct port forwarding is very important, especially if you're seeing call quality issues.
QOS settings especially on home user equipment have shown themselves to be unreliable, and often times testing done by users here shows better quality with QOS disabled. (Not always, but often enough that it's worth testing on a case-by-case basis.)
Cabling errors (Shorts in cable, crossing over/through a powerful EMI field, etc.) can cause packet loss. (so don't run your ethernet cords and phone cords across the line that feeds you dryer ;) )
Remember that if you are using a wireless phone, the phone it self may suffer from interfence and signal loss due to environmental factors, especially on the 2.4GHz spectrum.
(Factors include but are not limited to: Large pools of water, metal pipe/wiring, halogen lightbulbs, microwaves (in use), solid constructs (walls, the more dense the material, the worse for signal.)

Using wireless Ethernet to connect your VoIP phone instead of wiring your ATA or Softphone PC in adds a whole other realms of issues to debug.

That's the last thing most people would think to check because of the "it hasn't happened before, so why would it now" way of thinking.
I used to think that way too, until it took five of us in the office nearly half a day to determine this was causing the problems a customer of ours was experiencing. He tried a new cordless phone and it was fine.

Have you tried all the in-depth troubleshooting that Bloodsong has mentioned? This seems to be something on your end, not ours.

Shaf

I would say you're safe to bet on it not being a phone related issue based on that testing.

If you want help with your Router setup/testing feel free to PM me, ensure that your ATA device is hard-wired to the router while we're testing please.

At this point I highly suggest that you go ahead with taking screen shots of your ATA Configurations as well.

Settings such as Registration Time, Line Voltage and Dial Strings could help the community with troubleshooting tips for you.
The problem is with third-party ATAs the Free Phone Line guys while they try to be helpful work for a corporation who I'm willing to bet tells them the correct answer is "That's not support hardware."

As such a lot of the time they don't have the same device you're using for testing. That's why I also try to get the attention of the community for ATA help, and don't forget to use that Search function at the top right.

Just plunk your ATA device name into their (Ex. SPA3102) and you'll probably see a couple of troubleshooting threads come up from device owners.

Thank you for your offer.

To answer Steve - yes, i have tried the other steps mentioned. There are a lot of other threads on this forum and others where people are complaining of similar issues.

The ATA is hardwired and I have Rogers Extreme (10Mbs). Which screens do you want shots of?

If you're using the SPA3102 as your router as well and not just bridging it, it would be wise to disable NAT and test it out and compare your results.

Let me know if you need any help, I'd be glad to provide any insight I can.

Thanks for the offer!! I have a Linksys WRT320N that I use as my router.

My setup is Rogers Modem ----> WRT320N -------> SPA3102

Oddly, I am not able to use my phone just now. I have on hold with tech support for 20 mins now. My ATA shows registration as failed....
