You know, you have such a pitiful setup, you are lucky you are getting any VOIP at all! Use Skype until you get better gear. Because I guarantee you will not be satisfied with freephoneline.ca until you do something about the awful setup you now have! Garbage in, garbage out, and you are shocked you got garbage?

Because your roommates are taking up your bandwidth and you are on wireless. These are already problems by themselves. Fix your own problems before you crap on the service!

Wow.....so if I am on wireless and share internet with roommates then i pretty much cant use FPL?

isnt that a large amount of FPL's potential customerbase? (ie. most students)

if i get an ATA where am I going to plug it in? the modem is in the basement and I am on the 2nd floor.......so much for FPL

You're right, you cannot swear. This is a community forum and we'd like to keep it as friendly as possible. Please review our Appropriate Posting Practices thread for more information. Specifically where it outlines "Topics of a sensitive nature or that are not appropriate for someone at least the age of 14 years old will be removed and the poster asked to post them elsewhere."

I have also moved this post as it is neither a tip, nor a trick ;)

It all depends on usage, I am on an 11mbps network at home, with a Wireless G Thomson 784WL and my Freephoneline (Cisco IP Phone AND Software phone) works great.

Now think if I had 2 - 5 students living with me and how much bandwidth would be available to me...

You could use cordless phones, or get a switch to service the second floor.

It is possible to have freephoneline work for you, but you still have to do some work on your side. You might even have to spend money. It is your setup that is hostile to SIP VOIP, so you have to fix things on your side. Freephone's end works fine.

Freephoneline's customer base is anyone that does not want to pay $30 a month for phone service. Smart people would plow the savings into better gear instead of whine about the service. Freephoneline works, your setup does not.

As mentioned, a cordless phone sounds like one of your better options. There are some neat wifi sip phones out there, but I do not think they would be suitable or reliable enough for your needs or setup. In any case, you still need some access to the router, because there is a chance you have to forward ports to your ATA to get reliable service. You might also have to set up quality of service settings on the router so as to give 1st priority traffic to your VOIP ATA box. And as a heads up, your current router might not be up to the task, and you might have to shell out $40 for a good router. But hey, you being a student, you should be up to a new learning experience!
