Wow.....so if I am on wireless and share internet with roommates then i pretty much cant use FPL?
It is possible to have freephoneline work for you, but you still have to do some work on your side. You might even have to spend money. It is your setup that is hostile to SIP VOIP, so you have to fix things on your side. Freephone's end works fine.

isnt that a large amount of FPL's potential customer base? (ie. most students)
Freephoneline's customer base is anyone that does not want to pay $30 a month for phone service. Smart people would plow the savings into better gear instead of whine about the service. Freephoneline works, your setup does not.

if i get an ATA where am I going to plug it in? the modem is in the basement and I am on the 2nd floor.......so much for FPL
As mentioned, a cordless phone sounds like one of your better options. There are some neat wifi sip phones out there, but I do not think they would be suitable or reliable enough for your needs or setup. In any case, you still need some access to the router, because there is a chance you have to forward ports to your ATA to get reliable service. You might also have to set up quality of service settings on the router so as to give 1st priority traffic to your VOIP ATA box. And as a heads up, your current router might not be up to the task, and you might have to shell out $40 for a good router. But hey, you being a student, you should be up to a new learning experience!
